Dom D’Agostino calls ketones the fourth macronutrient. Just when I thought carbs, protein and fat was all I needed to calculate, ketones come in! He has a very interesting discussion with Tom Bilyeu about the positive effects that ketones and ketogenic diets can have for Alzheimers symptoms. As Dom says, Alzheimers is described as type 3 Diabetes; diabetes of the brain. This an insulin resistant state of the brain. Ketones can help restore the brain energy metabolism. Ketones can bypass the glucose transporter in the brain and stimulate the metabolic pathway to make ATP restoring the energy system. Interestingly as we age, glucose metabolism in the brain decreases, however, ketone metabolism does not. You can learn more on Impact Theory episode.
